THE LITERACY SUFFOLK/SCLS LIBRARY LITERACY COLLECTION
This is a collection of high interest/low level library books, resources, lesson plans, and videos designed to assist tutors in planning lessons for their adult learners. The collection is housed at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SCLS). A listing of these materials is available on every Suffolk County library’s computer database.

TO REQUEST THESE MATERIALS - USE YOUR LIBRARY CARD

  1. Visit your home library.
  2. Select the materials you wish to borrow. You need to know the TITLE and, if it is a series, the appropriate LEVEL.
  3. At the circulation desk, ask the staff to “put a hold” on your selections through inter-library loan from the Special Collections Department at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SCLS). If the staff has any questions, they may call Special Collections at 631.286.1600 ext. 1332
  4. The loan period for materials borrowed from SCLS only:
    Books are 60 days with two 30-day renewals
    Videos are 14 days with one 7-day renewal
  5. The loan period for materials borrowed from another library, not SCLS, will be determined by the policies of the lending library.
  6. If library materials are not returned or renewed on time, your library will charge you their usual overdue fees or send a bill for replacement cost.

HOW TO SEARCH FOR LIBRARY MATERIALS

In addition to the LITERACY SUFFOLK/SCLS literacy collection, many public libraries in Suffolk County have collections that support adult literacy. Searching the County Catalog can identify these materials. The address for the County Catalog is: http://alpha2.suffolk.lib.ny.us/

To search for literacy materials in the County Catalog, use the following subject headings:
For adult readers: Readers for adult learners
For tutor materials: Basic Education
For ESOL tutor materials: Basic Education - Textbooks for Foreign Speakers
For GED: General Educational Development Test
For TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language
For Citizenship: Citizenship

These are very general subject headings that group together materials housed in Adult New Reader Collections throughout the county. To find more specific topics, use the ‘Limit by’ feature of the County Catalog.
