The State of Literacy on Long Island
Legislative Breakfast & Symposium

Literacy Nassau and Literacy Suffolk teamed up for the first time for a Literacy Long Island Legislative Breakfast on November 30, 2007.  Held at Molloy College in Farmingdale, the breakfast and symposium provided a forum for discussion about the state of adult literacy on both the local and national levels.

Shown above with Executive Directors Gini Booth (Suffolk) and Tina Sanacore (Nassau), keynote speaker Martin G. Murphy, Director of Long Island Regional Adult Education Network, appealed to the audience to commit to the need to make literacy an Island-wide priority or “risk a quiet crisis that will affect the quality of life” on Long Island.   Murphy estimates that approximately one million adults on Long Island need help.  He stressed that helping adults build basic skills has “a double impact” in that literate parents are better equipped to raise literate children.

Guest speaker Amy Hagedorn, Board President of Substainable Long Island, praised the work of the two Long Island literacy organizations calling them a “regional powerhouse for widespread literacy.”
