Staged in a c. 1910 house located near Bellport Bay, guests were greeted by Literacy Suffolk staff and volunteers and offered information about the organization.

The sounds of lively music, performed by Jim and Diana Davies, Jeff Heisler and Greg Smith, drew guests through charming rooms and into the art gallery.

Many of the watercolors and oil paintings depicted familiar scenes along the south shore of Long Island. There was a captivating selection of photographs, and richly finished woodworking pieces.

Guests enjoyed refreshments and catching up with friends and acquaintances while considering which pieces would become favorites in their own homes.

Patricia Campbell, Painter
Born and raised in New Jersey, Patricia Campbell went west to receive a BA in Art History at Berkeley in 1961. After college, with her husband and young son, she lived around Europe for a year in a VW Camper. On returning in 1966, her husband took a position at Brookhaven National Lab, they set up housekeeping in East Patchogue, and had a second son. The Campbells became involved in starting an alternative school based on the “Summerhill” model. It became known as the Bay Community School and was eventually accredited by New York State. Additionally, she worked for a period of years at the Sou’Wester Bookshop in Bellport, and struggled for a while as a free-lance graphic artist. Finally, after volunteering at the Bellport Memorial Library she decided to go to Library School and in 1984 received an MLS and was admitted to the International Library Honor Society. Mrs. Campbell worked for the South Country Library for 20 years, first as Head of the Reference Dept, then as Director. During these years she oversaw a 4.3 million dollar addition to the library, belonged to a poetry reading group, and a book group that continues to meet regularly after more than 15 years. For thirty years she and her husband have been active sailors, often sailing to Maine in the summers. In her retirement she has become a passionate painter; her teachers have been Marlies Ihmels and Larry Johnston.
